Messier 42 (M42) is a diffuse nebula in the Orion constellation. M42 is also known as the Orion Nebula or even the Great Orion Nebula. Its alternative designation is NGC 1976.
Image shows a narrow band synthetic color revealing only sulphur II emission in red and oxygen III emission in blue. Hydrogen alpha (green channel) intentionally suppressed.
