Messier 42 (M42) is an emission-reflection nebula in the Orion constellation. M42 is better known as the Orion Nebula and sometimes as the Great Orion Nebula. Its alternative designation is NGC 1976.

Image created from data captured in 2012 on the Schulman Foundation’s 24-inch telescope on Mt. Lemmon.

The luminance data was obtained in separate longer and shorter exposures and then blended to allow many nebular details while still revealing the 4 star (“Trapezium) cluster at the hear of the nebula.

Data capture and reduction by Adam Block, University of Arizona. LRGB processing by JDS using CCDStack and Photoshop CC.
